Derived from the advanced technology of the liquid-cooled R 1200GS series, a groundbreaking iteration emerges. Unveiled at the prestigious EICMA event in Milan back in 2014, this latest rendition upholds BMW’s legacy in crafting Adventure motorcycles tailored for extensive journeys and exploration. Building upon the foundation of the 2013 R 1200GS model, this new variant boasts a revamped framework and a liquid-cooled powerplant, housing a 1200cc engine generating 125 horsepower at 7,750 rpm. Noteworthy is the inclusion of a redesigned gearbox featuring six speeds and a liquid-cooled multi-clutch system positioned at the front, diverging from the single-speed configuration of its predecessor. Repositioning the transmission shaft to the left side, BMW integrates an anti-vibration shaft between the transmission and axle, further mitigating oscillations. Moreover, enhancements include a 950-gram heavier crankshaft compared to the standard model, aimed at augmenting low-end torque and ensuring smoother operation under heavy loads.
Set apart from its simpler counterpart, the new R 1200GS Adventure exudes heightened prowess, with a suspension raised by 20mm over the base version, echoing the tradition of previous Adventure editions. Introducing a larger, mechanically adjustable windshield to deflect air currents, complemented by coordinating handguards and fortified grips on the handlebars. Enlarged footrests, along with adaptable seating for both sitting and standing positions, round out the aesthetic of the revamped R 1200GS Adventure. Adjustable saddle height ranging from 890mm to 910mm marks a 20mm increase over its predecessor, while BMW’s specifications indicate a weight nearing 260kg with a 90% fuel load – however, independent calculations peg the weight at 241kg. Notably towering over its standard counterpart with a seat height of 980mm versus 953mm, boasting a lengthier wheelbase (1510mm versus 1506mm), extended overall length (2255mm versus 2207mm), reduced wheelbase (92.7mm versus 99.1mm), and a narrowed caster angle (23.5 degrees from 25.5), these adjustments amalgamate increased dimensions with enhanced functionality.
